General educational information. This guide does not diagnose the cause of symptoms or provide individualized treatment.
What is moving here?
The hip connects the thigh and pelvis, with muscles around it participating in movement. The guide does not show or assess pelvic-health concerns.
What are you noticing?
Walking
Distance, terrain and the point at which you notice symptoms help describe the activity. Location alone cannot explain what is contributing.
Stairs
Going up and coming down may feel different. Describe that difference if you have noticed it, without repeatedly testing a painful movement.
Getting in or out of a chair
Seat height and the way a task is performed give useful context. The experience can involve several body areas and is not a diagnosis.
Sleeping on that side
Describe the positions or changes during the night that you have noticed. This detail does not by itself identify the source of discomfort.
Exercise or sport
The specific movement, activity demands and recent changes can guide a conversation. No exercise or return-to-sport plan is generated here.
Hip movement / stiffness
Describe the everyday movement you would like to manage more comfortably. A feeling of stiffness alone cannot identify a particular condition.
Not sure
You do not need to know which structure is involved. A change in walking, rest or daily activities is a useful starting point.
What an assessment may explore
An assessment can explore factors that may be contributing and help determine appropriate next steps.
- Hip movement and strength when appropriate
- Walking and transfers such as getting out of a chair
- Back or other areas when relevant
- Activities, sleep and recent changes
- What you want to return to
Questions you may want to bring to your assessment
- Could another area be contributing to what I’m feeling?
- What would appropriate progress look like?
- Which daily activities may need modification for now?
Not sure if this can wait?
Some symptoms or injuries may need medical assessment rather than routine physiotherapy. If you are uncertain about what level of care you need, consider contacting an appropriate healthcare service. For a medical emergency, call 911.
Your next step with Priyal
You can bring these questions to a healthcare professional. An assessment can help you discuss whether physiotherapy or another next step is appropriate.
