Movement Guide

Ankle & foot movement guide

Ankle or foot concerns can affect walking, standing, balance or exercise. Describe what has changed rather than trying to name a diagnosis.

General educational information. This guide does not diagnose the cause of symptoms or provide individualized treatment.

What is moving here?

The ankle and foot help support and move the body. The model shows a broad area, not the source of a particular foot or toe symptom.

What are you noticing?

Walking

Describe the distance, surface and when the discomfort becomes noticeable. A location or walking pattern cannot identify the source by itself.

Running

The type of run and any recent activity changes provide useful context. This guide does not set a running plan or determine whether running is appropriate.

Standing

The duration and setting can help describe your experience. Footwear and standing demands may be conversation points, not a diagnosis.

Stairs

The ankle and foot take part in stepping and controlling movement. Describe whether climbing or descending feels different; the pattern does not identify a condition.

Balance

Balance involves more than the ankle and foot. Discuss what you have noticed with an appropriate healthcare professional; this model cannot assess balance or its cause.

Sports or exercise

The particular movement and activity demands can guide your questions. This guide cannot determine readiness to return to sport.

Ankle or foot stiffness

Describe the daily movements that feel different. Stiffness is an experience to discuss, not proof of a particular tissue problem.

Not sure

Bring a description of what you notice and what you would like to do more comfortably. It is okay to have unanswered questions.

What an assessment may explore

An assessment can explore factors that may be contributing and help determine appropriate next steps.

  • Ankle and foot movement
  • Strength and walking when appropriate
  • Balance in an appropriate assessment setting
  • Footwear and activity demands when relevant
  • Your history, other symptoms and goals

Questions you may want to bring to your assessment

  • What should I expect during an assessment?
  • Which activities may be appropriate for me?
  • What would appropriate progress look like?
Not sure if this can wait?

Some symptoms or injuries may need medical assessment rather than routine physiotherapy. If you are uncertain about what level of care you need, consider contacting an appropriate healthcare service. For a medical emergency, call 911.
